This well-known, traditional variety produces long, white stems with a sweet, mild flavour. The glaucous green leaves have good cold hardiness and plants are slow to bolt in spring. Harvest throughout autumn and winter for use in a variety of savoury dishes.

Growing Info:
Sow Jan-March under cover in pots or modules of seed compost, 10mm deep. Propagate at 10-15°C until germination, at which point grow on at lower temperatures. When young plants reach 20cm tall, acclimatise, and plant out into well-drained soil, 15cm deep, 25cm apart in rows 30cm apart. March-May, sow sparingly outside in drills 10mm deep in a prepared seed bed. Can be transplanted to final growing location later.
Aftercare:
Make sure planting hole is wet prior to planting. Mound soil around the plants as they grown for long white shanks.
